War Horse

The Terminal

Jurassic Park

Catch Me If You Can

Indiana Jones

aaaaand so many others…

How can I pick just one Steven Spielberg movie to watch today?

This man is a legend 😍.

He’s great at what he does.

We also share a birthday.  I was born on his 40th.  😇

You know what?  I’m going to pick War Horse to watch.  Because Tom Hiddleston in uniform.

30 Day Movie Challenge 2 – Day 9

Day 9: A Movie You Never Get Tired of Watching

50 First Dates

When I first saw an ad for this movie, I misunderstood.  I thought it was about two people who kept trying to have the perfect first date, something would mess it up, and they’d try again another day.  Yeah, I wasn’t paying attention at all.

It wasn’t until we arrived at the theatre that my then-boyfriend suggested 50 First Dates.  I’m glad he did.  It was love at first sight with this movie.

What movie do you never tire of watching?

30 Day Movie Challenge 2 – Day 8

 –Minor spoilers–

Day 8: A Movie You Thought You Wouldn’t Like, But Ended Up Loving

Complete action/suspense movie where a man’s daughter gets kidnapped for sex trafficking?  No, thanks.

Said man pursues his daughter, killing all the bastards involved who lie in his path without repercussions (in the actual movie)?  Yes.  Yes.  Just yes.

Of course, when it was over, Hubby started pointing out the things that were wrong with it.

Hubby: “He could never get away with all of that. He just created an international incident.”

Me: “Shut your mouth.  It’s perfect.”

Is there a movie you thought you’d hate, but ended up loving?

30 Day Movie Challenge 2 – Day 7

Day 7: Favourite Disney Villain

Loki in The Avengers.

The only villain I like.  He’s the only reason this option didn’t get trashed.  I don’t generally like villains, but in The Avengers I was almost rooting for Loki. (Almost!)

Tom Hiddleston as a human being keeps Loki fascinating in my book.  When an actor turns out to not be so great of a person, it makes it hard to still enjoy their great characters.  Hiddleston is awesome.  He’s respectable, a gentleman, and great at what he does.

A man created these pie charts… then, a woman corrected it.

30 Day Movie Challenge 2 – Day 6

Day 6: Favourite Soundtrack From a Movie

Home Alone

Why not have Christmas in July?

I have to pick the entire musical contents of this movie.  I dislike none of the songs, and it’s somehow not quite Christmas without listening to the music from Home Alone (even if it’s just by watching the movie).

Sure, I could have picked any number of songs from a lot of movies for their great scores (such as Spider-Man 2 for every song, or X-Men: First Class especially for “Magneto“), but I have to go with this one.

What’s your favourite movie soundtrack?

30 Day Movie Challenge 2 – Day 5

Day 5: A Movie That Makes You Happy

The Impostors

I don’t even really know why I love this movie so much.  It’s definitely a love-it-or-hate-it movie.  Normally when I watch a movie with this type of absurdly ridiculous humour, I get angry that someone’s brain spewed such nonsense and called it funny.  But here, there’s something about this movie that changes it from an absolute no-no to I’m-just-going-to-dance-around-the-room-and-smile-until-it’s-over.  (Unless my least favourite scene is on — then I am angry at the absurdity, haha.)

Maybe it’s the comedic pairing of Oliver Platt and Stanley Tucci.  Perhaps it’s Steve Buscemi’s suicidal character whose name is ironically “Happy.”  Maybe it’s how all the stories get tied together by the end of the movie.  Maybe I just happened to rediscover it at the tail-end of the time in my life when I might consider this sort of stupid humour as actually being funny.

While it’s a mix of a bunch of reasons, I’m convinced it’s mostly the last point.  It also wouldn’t have been possible without the first.  I love Platt and Tucci as actors, and their characters in this movie are absolutely adorable with their child-like innocence.

30 Day Movie Challenge 2 – Day 4

Day 4: Favourite Disney Movie

Big Hero 6

I have several favourites, but the only reason this was easy was because I was able to pair my other favourite Disney movies with other topics on this 30 Day Movie Challenge.

As usual, I like each and every character for different reasons, but honestly, I want a Baymax.  My very own Baymax.  When I’m sick, he’ll know exactly what’s wrong and how to fix it.  He’d be my cuddle buddy — like a walking, talking teddy bear.  Et cetera.

I’ve admitted it before, but I’m glad that Disney bought Marvel.  We’ll cover that in another post.

30 Day Movie Challenge 2 (NEW!)

I love movies.  Unless you’re new here, you know this.  I can read all day, but by evening I decide it’s time to watch a movie so I can relax before bedtime.

I keep going back to my post about the 30-Day Movie Challenge and decided I wanted to do it again.  I made a new post using the same questions, and had as many different answers as I could, but I wanted something new.

Here’s a fresh list.  Most of the topics are compiled from various other challenges while some are my own.  It guarantees that I won’t have any options that don’t particularly apply to me, or are just too hard to decide.

I’m also going to do this a bit differently.  I’ll leave the list of topics here, but will also do my best to make posts about the movies I watch to suit them.  (Movies I’ve already written about will be linked.)  I will link my choices to the topics here once they are posted.

1. Best new movie you saw last year
2. A kids’ movie that’s not very kid-friendly
3. Your favourite movie trilogy/saga
4. Favourite Disney movie
5. A movie that makes you happy

30 Day Movie Challenge

I don’t know how the current weather is for you, but the area where I live has had a sudden temperature drop below freezing with a threatening snow storm this weekend. That sounds like perfect weather to make some hot chocolate and cuddle up on the couch with a great movie!

I recently came across this 30 Day Movie Challenge from TheaterThoughts.com, posted last year. Basically, every day for thirty days you watch a different type of movie based on your tastes. Get ready for movie night x 30!

While it would be perfectly fine to fill out the list as you go through the month, I’m doing it all at once for the sake of the blog.

30 Day Movie Challenge

Day 01 – The best movie you saw during the last year: (I’m assuming this means new movie) Now You See Me
Day 02 – The most underrated movie: The Impostors
Day 03 – A movie that makes you really happy: Last Holiday
Day 04 – A movie that makes you sad: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Day 05 – Favourite love story in a movie: Made of Honor
Day 06 – Favourite made-for-TV movie: Stargate: Continuum
Day 07 – The most surprising plot twist or ending: Angel’s Dance
Day 08 – A movie that you’ve seen countless times: All of my favourites ;o), but for the sake of the challenge, Spider-Man 2
Day 09 – A movie with the best soundtrack: Home Alone
Day 10 – Favourite classic movie: Mary Poppins
Day 11 – A movie that changed your opinion about something: Vegucated (documentary)
Day 12 – A movie that you hate: Up
Day 13 – A movie that is a guilty pleasure: The Impostors (this duplicate couldn’t be avoided)
Day 14 – A movie that no one would expect you to love: Red Dawn
Day 15 – A character to whom you can relate the most: Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada (fashion-wise)
Day 16 – A movie that you used to love, but now hate: First Knight (my dislike for this particular Lancelot grew too much to continue enjoying the movie)
Day 17 – A movie that disappointed you the most: Eragon
Day 18 – A movie that you wish more people would’ve seen: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Day 19 – Favourite movie based on a book/comic/etc.: The Three Musketeers (1993)

Day 26 – A movie that you love, but everyone else hates: The Terminal
Day 27 – A movie that you wish you had seen in theatres: Inception
Day 28 – A movie you still don’t understand: 2001: A Space Odessey
Day 29 – A movie from your childhood: Beethoven
Day 30 – Your favourite movie of all time: 2012 (JUST “2012“… Not 2012: Ice Age or 2012: Doomsday.)

The End is Just the Beginning

You may or may not have noticed that for the first couple of months this year I only had two posts.  This is because I was stuck in an extended fandom where all I cared about for two months was two movies.  I went back-and-forth between watching The Three Musketeers and 2012 over and over again.  The longest extended fandom I had was in 2005 — for the entire year I was obsessed with Spider-Man 2 and didn’t care much about anything else.  (That, however, is a whole other story deserving its own entry.  First, let’s talk about 2012.)

I saw 2012 once after it came out –whether in a theatre or on DVD, I don’t recall– and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I love a good doomsday movie.  While I don’t find it to be an all-star cast, I recognised many people, even just in more background parts.  There were more obvious parts in leading roles such as John Cusack, Danny Glover, and Oliver Platt.  Lesser roles such as “the boss from Just Shoot Me” (George Segal), John Billingsley (who played Dr Phlox in Star Trek: Enterprise), and Woody Harrelson.  Then, there are the tiny parts that may have had a line or two, or even none at all!  “Sheriff Andy from Eureka” (Ty Olsson) had a line on Air Force One, and “King Midas from Once Upon A Time” (Alex Zahara) was part of the bridge crew on Ark 4.  (Yes, there were many more from each category, but instead of wasting time listing them all, I’ll just let you consult IMDb for yourself.)

I’m going to skip giving a summary of the movie and go straight to talking about it.

If you know only one thing about me by now, it’s that I adore movies surrounding “the apocalypse.”  Imminent collisions with asteroids (such as Armageddon and Doomsday Rock), atmospheric/Terran catastrophes (such as 2012Arctic BlastThe Day After Tomorrow and The Core), destruction/zombification by human error (such as I Am Legend and the 2002 movie The Time Machine), and the list just keeps going.  I’m not sure why I get so excited about the end of the world, but it’s so fascinating!  It really gets my imaginative wheels turning and makes for great stories (whether I write them or not).  They also make the best dreams!

The story of this movie is so much more complex than any B movie.  (Hollywood really knows their stuff!)  I love how the many individual stories come together by the end (whether or not they make it there alive), including grave mistakes that may end up saving someone, and are all integral to the ultimate survival of humanity.  In the end, the good guy wins.  (Eat it, Anheuser!)

I’d spent enough time mentally in the world of 2012 that of course I started coming up with fan fiction in my head.  Once, I had even set out to write it.  I even went so far as to doing research into the history of the character I’d created.  (Not only did it help me figure out who she was exactly, but it also helped perfect her story from the lame one I’d had originally.)   However, after only writing a tiny bit of it I was done.  I’ll leave the fanfic to the ones who are still allowed to write.  (I happened across a 2012 fanfic called “The Last Day of the Cruise Ship” which I’m looking forward to reading.)

Keep up the good work, movie makers.  2012 is one film that made this moviegoer very happy.  Putting out more movies like this one sure wouldn’t disappoint me.
