Day 9: A Movie You Never Get Tired of Watching

50 First Dates

When I first saw an ad for this movie, I misunderstood.  I thought it was about two people who kept trying to have the perfect first date, something would mess it up, and they’d try again another day.  Yeah, I wasn’t paying attention at all.

It wasn’t until we arrived at the theatre that my then-boyfriend suggested 50 First Dates.  I’m glad he did.  It was love at first sight with this movie.

What movie do you never tire of watching?

Day 7: Favourite Disney Villain

Loki in The Avengers.

The only villain I like.  He’s the only reason this option didn’t get trashed.  I don’t generally like villains, but in The Avengers I was almost rooting for Loki. (Almost!)

Tom Hiddleston as a human being keeps Loki fascinating in my book.  When an actor turns out to not be so great of a person, it makes it hard to still enjoy their great characters.  Hiddleston is awesome.  He’s respectable, a gentleman, and great at what he does.

A man created these pie charts… then, a woman corrected it.

Who is your favourite Disney villain?

Day 5: A Movie That Makes You Happy

The Impostors

220px-The_Impostors_DVD

I don’t even really know why I love this movie so much.  It’s definitely a love-it-or-hate-it movie.  Normally when I watch a movie with this type of absurdly ridiculous humour, I get angry that someone’s brain spewed such nonsense and called it funny.  But here, there’s something about this movie that changes it from an absolute no-no to I’m-just-going-to-dance-around-the-room-and-smile-until-it’s-over.  (Unless my least favourite scene is on — then I am angry at the absurdity, haha.)

Maybe it’s the comedic pairing of Oliver Platt and Stanley Tucci.  Perhaps it’s Steve Buscemi’s suicidal character whose name is ironically “Happy.”  Maybe it’s how all the stories get tied together by the end of the movie.  Maybe I just happened to rediscover it at the tail-end of the time in my life when I might consider this sort of stupid humour as actually being funny.

While it’s a mix of a bunch of reasons, I’m convinced it’s mostly the last point.  It also wouldn’t have been possible without the first.  I love Platt and Tucci as actors, and their characters in this movie are absolutely adorable with their child-like innocence.

Day 4: Favourite Disney Movie

Big Hero 6

4204335-bighero6team

I have several favourites, but the only reason this was easy was because I was able to pair my other favourite Disney movies with other topics on this 30 Day Movie Challenge.

As usual, I like each and every character for different reasons, but honestly, I want a Baymax.  My very own Baymax.  When I’m sick, he’ll know exactly what’s wrong and how to fix it.  He’d be my cuddle buddy — like a walking, talking teddy bear.  Et cetera.

I’ve admitted it before, but I’m glad that Disney bought Marvel.  We’ll cover that in another post.

Day 3: Your Favourite Movie Trilogy/Saga

Back to the Future

back-to-the-future

Another one that won’t sway me with a debate.  Yes, each movie has its pros and cons, but overall I think this is the best movie trilogy ever made.

I generally hate sequels — most of the time they’re a huge letdown.  I always give them a chance, though, because you never know which ones are going to be an exception.

Back to the Future was meant to be a stand-alone movie; however, with the way it ended, fans demanded a sequel.  I think they did a brilliant job of making it work, especially by giving it a feeling of completion at the end of part three.

Just for kicks and giggles, I’m going to leave this here:

Day 1: Best New Movie You Saw Last Year

The Martian

THE-MARTIAN-movie-poster2

There’s no debating this choice.  Science, Mars, potatoes, and Matt Damon.

I’m not going to delve too deeply into this movie, because I’ve talked about it a bit in previous blogs (here and here).  I am, however, going to highly recommend it, again.

And conclude with a shameless plug for The Mars Generation 😇.

30 Day Movie Challenge 2 (NEW!)

30-DMC

I love movies.  Unless you’re new here, you know this.  I can read all day, but by evening I decide it’s time to watch a movie so I can relax before bedtime.

I keep going back to my post about the 30-Day Movie Challenge and decided I wanted to do it again.  I made a new post using the same questions, and had as many different answers as I could, but I wanted something new.

Here’s a fresh list.  Most of the topics are compiled from various other challenges while some are my own.  It guarantees that I won’t have any options that don’t particularly apply to me, or are just too hard to decide.

I’m also going to do this a bit differently.  I’ll leave the list of topics here, but will also do my best to make posts about the movies I watch to suit them.  (Movies I’ve already written about will be linked.)  I will link my choices to the topics here once they are posted.

1. Best new movie you saw last year
2. A kids’ movie that’s not very kid-friendly
3. Your favourite movie trilogy/saga
4. Favourite Disney movie
5. A movie that makes you happy
6. Favourite soundtrack from a movie
7. Favourite Disney villain
8. A movie you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving
9. A movie you never get tired of watching
10. You practically know this movie’s whole script
11. Your favorite director
12. Favourite cameo
13. A movie everyone raves about, but you hate
14. A movie you could watch on repeat
15. Favourite animated movie
16. Favourite chick flick
17. A movie that reminds you of home
18. Favourite main character

20. Last movie you saw in a cinema
21. A movie that made you think WTF AM I WATCHING?
22. A movie you feel didn’t live up to the hype

Why the Renaissance Faire is Amazing

IMG_2439

I discovered in the last year or two that if not for Christmas, the Renaissance Festival would be my favourite time of the year.  The only one I’ve attended (and apparently one of the best ones, according to friends who’ve gone elsewhere) is at The Castle of Muskogee in Muskogee, Oklahoma.  Yes, this castle is a permanent structure!

I first attended the Renaissance Festival there in 2011.  I was immediately hooked!  If we’d realised that we would go every weekend, we would have bought season passes and saved loads of money on tickets, haha.  We also attended the masquerade ball, one of the separate events that happen Saturday evenings after the faire ends for the day.  (I’ve already talked about the masque ball, and my meeting the Doctor, here.)

Now don’t hate me for saying this, but to me it’s like a convention to the nth degree.  At cons, it’s getting together with people who have similar interests, meeting/seeing famous people (while it’s more their characters I want to meet), and buying lots of stuff you don’t need.  All that is super fun, and the conversations, parties, and making friends with fellow fans is the best part.

At a Ren faire, it’s getting together with people who have similar interests (or at least like to dress up and/or pretend to be someone else for a while), living in another world with characters from that world (and seriously, the volunteers at this one spend a full month beforehand getting into character), consuming at least somewhat period appropriate food and drink, and buying lots of stuff you don’t need.  Not to mention the shows: duels, acrobats, bards, magicians, knighting ceremonies, singing pirates!, and so much more!

I’ve gone as myself attending an event, myself dressed up and in another world, and even in character attending a yearly festival (who says there’s no such thing as a vegan pirate? 😋).  I’ve gone with one person, several people, and even by myself (honestly, that’s my favourite).  However I do it, it’s always some of the best fun I have all year.

If you plan on attending this particular Renaissance Festival, here is a list of my absolute favourite things.  This is neither a complete list, nor have seen everything there is to see.

Shows:

-Tribal Circus, Italian Piazza
-Jolly Rogers (my favourite singing pirates), Castleton Harbor
-Brothers Dimm (get there early, as this tends to be a popular show), Mud Stage
-Heroic Knights of Old Joust (most popular), Tournament Arena

Food & Drink:

-Jerusalem Café (labelled vegan options!), Village Center
-Cappuccino Inn (coffee shop!), Italian Piazza

There is one place in the Village Center that has sweet potato fries, my favourite food at the faire, but I keep forgetting to see what the place is called.

Shops (doesn’t include clothing) and Games:

-Lilystrations (watercolour paintings by Lily of Tribal Circus), Italian Piazza
-Badger Blades (really Hubby’s favourite), King’s Highway
-Majikah Perfumery, King’s Highway
-Aerie Books, Celtic Quarter
-St. Sadie Soaps & More, Celtic Quarter
-Tomato Jerk, Celtic Quarter
-Medival Mapmaker (historical AND nerdy maps), Castle Keepe

#TBT – Non-Mummy’s Mother’s Day

This entry was originally posted on a blog I was writing back in early 2012.  I recently had reason to go back and look for something in that blog, and I thought I’d share this again here.  And yes, I wrote this post before I became vegan.

This was quite a busy and fun weekend.  Friday, all of us girls in the family here got our nails done together.  Saturday, I helped retrieve the Edible Arrangement for a baby shower my sister-in-law hosted.  –I’m not a huge pineapple fan, but it’s amazing covered in chocolate 😉–  I then went with my mother-in-law to help in the nursery at a church.

Sunday.  Mother’s Day.  I took my “son” to the Renaissance Festival at the Castle of Muskogee.  He’s only nine years my junior, but he’s always looked at least 5 years older than his actual age.  (He’s not biologically mine.)

Because he looks like an adult, I’ve recently been carded to be sure I was over 16, and it was just the two of us, he got a lot of “girlfriend” comments.  I threw a couple of them for a loop by correcting them with “mother.”  It was hilarious!  One guy suddenly stopped walking, and with an über confused look on his face, was like, “What?”

Another guy selling flowers motioned the basket toward him and said, “Hint! Hint!”  I pointed at Son and said, “Son!”  The man’s first reaction was, “Well, hey, it’s Mother’s Day!  You gave him life; the least he can do is give you a flower.”  Then, our appearances clicked in his head and he said something to the extent of, “Wait, how are you his mom?”  I just laughed and told the truth: that he’s way younger than he looks and I’m way older than I look.  Then, he said, “Now I definitely believe that!”

Sadly, of course, my brain didn’t come up with a comeback to the other comments until it was too late.  One was “That girl in the blue is much better looking than the one you had with you last week!”  Wish I would have thought at the time to say, “I’m flattered that you think his mother is more beautiful than his girlfriend!”

Even in the Elder Scrolls and Fable games, I always stop to listen to the bards.
Anyway, the Ren Faire is always so much fun, even though most of the time we’re just walking around and looking at overpriced items in the shops.  However, there was a small shop we finally wandered into that had items for far less coin than others.  I walked away with a mid-length cloak for $38 (instead of about $180 for a full-length), and we both got awesome-looking hoods for $12 each.  The one thing I wanted to buy for my costume (a ruffled skirt to go over my dress) was $250.  I’d only brought $160 🙁.  At least now I’m more motivated to make it myself, haha.

After walking around in the rising temperatures and bright sunlight for 5 1/2 hours, we decided it was time to head home.  Since it was the last day of frappuccino happy hour at Starbucks, and still 30 minutes left in it, we headed there so I could get my fix.  I was expecting it to be packed, and we would have to be brave among the stares in our cosplay, but there were only about four people inside.  The only one who said anything about the costumes was the lady in front of us in line and we talked about the Ren Faire for a bit.

They can’t even spell my fake name right, haha.
When ordering my drink, I gave them my character name (Amaryllis) to put on the cup.  Just one last Renaissance Festival moment to enjoy before I called it a day.  I was spent… and I so want to go back!

#TBT – Frappuccinos and Fairy Tales

This entry was originally posted on a blog I was writing back in early 2012.  I recently had reason to go back and look for something in that blog, and I thought I’d share this again here.  And yes, I wrote this post before I became vegan.

Last weekend, the house got emptied and cleaned.  For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel agonized to see an empty house; I felt accomplished!  I’m so glad that part’s over.

Today was the start of a new season for frappuccino happy hour at Starbucks!  I held myself back until then to try the new Mocha Cookie Crumble frappuccino.  I even (yet again) skipped tiramisu as my weekly dessert to try this seemingly amazing treat.  As usual, though, I ordered it skinny with soy, but I kept the whip since it is new as well.  Oh.  My goodness.  I’m so glad I tried it.  Not as good as tiramisu, but very good.  I could almost eat the whip by itself, haha.

As I consumed my chocolatey treat, I read A Child’s Book of Stories, which I call “my fairy tale book.”  (Even though it’s not all fairy tales.)  My mum bought it for $4 from a homeschool bookshop when I was… maybe six or seven.  She never used it, and years later was going to get rid of it; however, it somehow intrigued me so I held onto it.

I never actually started reading it until late high school.  I decided that that’s the book I wanted to read to my growing child if I ever got pregnant, so I started reading it to check it out.  “Beauty and the Beast” became my absolute favourite.  Even though it is much different from the Disney version, my love for the story was again rekindled when I saw the play at Disney World for my senior trip.

I’m not sure why I stopped reading the book; it certainly wasn’t for boredom.

The new ABC show Once Upon A Time caught my interest from the beginning.  When the episode “Skin Deep” aired (about Beauty and the Beast), I knew I was definitely hooked.  I watched that episode more than twenty times in the next week.  I then wondered where my fairy tale book had gone.  Thankfully, I found it when I was packing up the house.  I set it aside to keep with me and not go into the storage unit.

Now that I have a few weeks to relax, I’m enjoying being able to read my precious fairy tale book <3.
